Standard 5:
In the beginning of the story the author starts with a ordinary morning family life when the family wake up to a snowy day with no school and a car trip to Mia's parents friends. Out of no where they change from a family car trip to a horrific car accident. Mia wakes up as a ghost form and while her true body is lying in the hospital she thinks about all her past events and her life and how it would be without a family and deciding if she should stay or leave as in dead. I think that by using this type of organization the author makes the book more suspenseful making the reader think and wanting to choose for her and giving the reader a chance of good imagery with specific details about her past. Also it makes the reader want to keep reading to find out what Mia final choice is. In my opinion the author makes me and or other readers really think about his or her life making them want to value it as long as they have it and just thinking deeply and putting themselves in Mia's shoes. I was wondering why did the author decide to change from on thing to another like for example at one moment they are in a car peacefully and out of no where it turns into a massacre? I think the author did this to create a sense of shock, this shock will want propel the reader to the story. If the author leaves out key details it would leave the reader asking questions. If the author is to descriptive it will take the shock out of the scene. Another scene that left readers in shock is when teddy dies. The author doesn't just kill teddy off at the scene, she waits until the reader gets further into the book to kill teddy off, the shock of the event can continue to propel the readers to the story.

Standard 3Standard 3: Analyze the impact of the authors choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama. I am going display this standard in if I stay.
Mia is surrounded by a loving and supporting family. In the text Mia says "I was growing up happy and healthy"(Foreman,pg85). Mia's statement about growing up happy and healthy advocates that she grew up In a happy household. When the author choose to surround Mia with a loving family it later affected her choice to die or stay alive. The author introduced Mia's best friend, Kim as an enemy. Mia says "I hated Kim even more..."(Foreman,pg69). The author did this so Kim could then use the story of how they used to be enemies to influence Mia to rest with her parents. Kim telling Mia to go rest with her family and Adam asking Mia to stay alive created a bigger inner conflict in Mia. The inner conflict was caused by how relationship's were formed in the book and allowed the story to proceed in a interesting fashion. Will Mia become a stronger person because her whole family died or will she become weaker because of the pain caused by the death of her immediate family? I think that if Mia has friends and family and Adam to support her she will move on and live a happy life but if she is left alone she will become very weak and give up o everything and everyone. How might the author change the outcome of the story? The Author had two options of choices to make one was stay without a family but have friends and family and Adam to love her and support her or leave and be with her family and end her successful bright life and hurt the ones that love her. |
